Back to school at Topshop Unique, AW14, London Fashion Week
Topshop Unique at the Tate Modern on Sunday afternoon nodded to British school days, and the coolest girl in class.
Gymslips and sports kits were topped with warm padding, and those puffas all the naughty girls used to wear to smoke.
The show notes described one of the inspirations – “the soft girl who wants to be tough, the tomboy who wants to be pretty”.
Royal blue trench coats were oversized but feather light, worn over slips and sheer bodices embroidered with tattoo motifs and delicate flowers.
Clean, modern wool mix tailoring accompanied light mohair, as tonal shearing teamed up with traditional “weather-proofed” outerwear.
Elsewhere there was buttermilk, ginger, chestnut and champagne to soften uniform greys, and forest greens – a celebration of the great British countryside.
